Sign the Petition, Save Ocean Life: Stop the Detonation of WWII-era Bombs at Molokini

Environmentalists, marine conservation experts, and respected dive professionals are outraged by the U.S. Navy’s plans to detonate two WWII-era bombs around Maui’s Molokini Crater this month…

The explosion of these devices could cause irreversible damage to coral reefs, ocean life, and to the island itself — heavily disrupting the delicate ecosystems.

Molokini and its surrounding areas were declared a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, and are full of birds and marine life — including reef sharks, ornate octopuses, manta rays, moray eels, and a colorful variety of fish.

The endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles are also known to frequent the crater.

Because of the beauty of the reef — which has been growing for centuries — it has become a favorite destination for snorkelers and divers.

The military explosives that didn’t detonate as intended must be removed because of threats to public safety, but we are asking the Navy to use more imagination, thought, care, and consideration to solve this problem.

The easy way out would be to simply detonate the ordnance, which is adjacent to some of the healthiest and most famed coral reefs in Hawaii — but we believe this option is unacceptable.

There are other options and with all the technology available to the U.S. Navy, we submit that an alternative needs to be found.

We must all do our part to protect wildlife and the environment, so please sign the petition to prevent the bombing before it’s too late. Share it with your family and loved ones so that they can sign it too.
