Elk and Orangutan Take a Stand To Protect Their Homes From Land Development

The elk stood its ground in Russia when an excavator rolled in to dig up the ground for a future park.

In the second video, an orangutan desperately tried to stop a bulldozer from destroying his part of the jungle.

Deforestation is done for different reasons but most of it occurs from cattle ranching, logging, and development. The practice is very sad because animals’ homes are destroyed in the process … but the destruction affects humans, as well.

Deforestation can lead to desertification, climate change, flooding, soil erosion, and increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

One of the most dangerous effects is the loss of animal and plant species due to the destruction of their habitat. A lot of people may not know this, but most land animals and plant species — both known and unknown — live in forests. The trees provide shelter and temperature for these living things and when the trees are destroyed, it’s a dangerous situation for the inhabitants.

Forests protect the planet by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The loss of trees leads to a greater release of harmful greenhouse gases.

Trees also help regulate the water cycle. Deforested areas have less water in the air to be returned to the soil, causing dryer soil and the inability to grow crops. The trees help the land retain water and topsoil that provide rich nutrients to sustain forest life. Without the trees, the soil erodes and washes away.

At Karmagawa, we’re sad to see these videos and that animals lose their homes because of further land development. We want animals to live freely and peacefully, just like how we want to live.
