Jambolina, the circus bear from Ukraine, has been rescued and has finally reached her new home.
Before the rescue, the 11-year-old bear had been kept in a tiny cage in her previous owner’s garage. The pandemic made things worse for Jambolina because there were no circus shows, causing the poor bear to be locked up for months.
The living conditions were not appropriate for a bear and it negatively impacted her health — even her teeth were in bad condition. The cage was so tight that Jambolina couldn’t stand or move around.

Thanks to our friends at Four Paws International and the Arosa Bear Sanctuary, a team was sent to rescue Jambolina.
The rescue was a big challenge and it took four days to get the bear safely from Ukraine to the sanctuary located in Switzerland — going through Poland, Germany, and Austria.
Arosa Bear Sanctuary opened in 2018 and already houses two 14-year-old bears named Amelia and Meimo … so Jambolina won’t be alone.
The team hopes that through proper treatment, Jambolina will get accustomed to the rhythm of hibernation and regain her natural instincts.
Bears are meant to be in the wild and Jambolina has been caged for a long time. The sanctuary has the space that she needs to give her a new start in life where she will no longer be abused and will receive all the care she needs!
At Karmagawa and SaveTheReef, we love stories like this. Animals are meant to be free and deserve to be cared for. We hope Jambolina recovers quickly and that she enjoys the rest of her life.
