Ship Called ‘the Manta’ Is Designed To Rid Our Oceans of Plastic Pollution

A team that calls themselves The Sea Cleaners designed a superyacht that will clean up our oceans.

Check out these videos …

The ship is called The Manta and it’s the first concentrated ecology and technology ship that’s capable of collecting, processing, and recovering large quantities of marine plastic waste.

The solution is the brainchild of Yvan Bourgnon, a French adventurer and ecologist. He was competing in the famous “Transat Jacques Vabre” boat race when he had a head-on collision with a giant container in the open sea, forcing him out of the race. The shocking event made him realize the amount of pollution found in the ocean.

In September 2016 he founded “The Sea Cleaners” and dedicated it to fight ocean plastic pollution. To face the challenge, Yvan surrounded himself with the right people, which included experts and professionals already knowledgeable about the issue.

The Manta is still in the concept phase but will use state-of-the-art tools to remove floating plastic waste before it gets degraded and irreversibly pollutes the marine environments. It will even have a factory on board to collect, sort, and store the plastic waste.

Three treadmills installed between the hulls of the ship will collect large quantities of plastic right from the water and the ship will store more than 250 tons of the waste. Two powerful cranes will be on board to remove larger floating debris.

The ship will then bring the waste to the land where it will be handled and adapted by recycling centers. The Manta aims to collect 20 million pounds of trash from the ocean each year.
