Villages in Bali Are Dumping Trash Illegally Along Riverbanks

2 Mins read

A village in South Tabanan has been dumping its trash illegally for the past year, making the plastic pollution in Bali worse.

Check out this video …

Three trucks have been used to dump trash at this site daily and with big rains, some of the trash will probably end up in the Sungai Yeh Sungi, Bali’s second most polluted river.

Indonesia is the world’s second-largest ocean plastic polluter after China. Plastic has been a serious problem on the island of Bali and the problem is being blamed on garbage mismanagement.

In November 2018, a dead whale was found in Wakatobi National Park with over 13 pounds of plastic waste in its stomach!

The island has been moving towards trash autonomy and its central landfill named Suwung will be closing this July. Because of this, more and more of these dumping sites are popping up along riverbanks.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a reallocation of waste management funds so the villages have no better solution than to dump their waste illegally.

The whole island’s waste management system needs a major overhaul and urgent infrastructure changes to prevent these landfills from becoming the new normal. There is such a huge gap in resources that is preventing citizens from properly addressing waste management in their communities.

At Karmagawa and SaveTheReef, we are using our channels to let people know that this is going on. If something isn’t done, the beautiful beaches and land will be destroyed and all the marine life will be put in danger. It’s not too late for us to change our ways. Our wildlife and our planet deserve better!
