We shared this viral video of two men heartlessly dumping a husky on our Instagram page a few days ago:

The husky in the video is confused when he is left by the side of the road and tries to chase after the car when it takes off.

This heartbreaking video was posted by dog rescuer @ms.mojorising_ in El Paso County, California, with the hope that it would help police catch the cruel owners responsible for the poor dog’s abandonment.

Luckily, the footage went viral and led to the arrest of 67-year-old Luis Antonio Campus, who appears to be the driver in the video. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is working to arrest the second person in the video soon.

The witness behind the camera reported the incident, and due to her efforts, the husky was collected quickly and brought into the sheriff’s office where he was examined by a vet. After determining the dog was in good health, authorities brought him to a local dog rescue, where he stayed until he was adopted by a family. The family named the dog Nanook after a character in the film Lost Boys.

Nanook was lucky to be found and cared for so quickly. But many pets who are being abandoned by careless owners on a daily basis don’t get a happy ending. More and more news stories are being published of animals being neglected and carelessly dumped by their owners.

The widespread lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in animal adoptions last year as people sought companionship during quarantine. Now that the lockdowns are ending, there is an alarmingly high number of pets being abandoned. Animal rescues are overwhelmed and dog pounds are reaching capacity as more and more people realize they cannot keep a pet and maintain a busy lifestyle at the same time. When this happens, it is the innocent, voiceless animals who suffer.

At Karmagawa and SaveTheReef we’re heartbroken by so many animals being cruelly abandoned like this. You can help by donating to our special fundraiser to Rescue More Animals in Need! You can help save an innocent life!
