Thousands of dead fish have been found along the Hudson River, causing a horrible smell.
The Atlantic menhaden — also known as “bunkers” — are a schooling fish that swim in large numbers and use the Hudson estuary as a nursery.
According to the environmental organization, Riverkeeper, the fish are suffocating.
The amount of oxygen that’s present in a body of water is an indicator of its health — and the Hudson River is experiencing reduced levels of dissolved oxygen which marine life needs to breathe.
Hot and sunny days can cause the river to heat and lower the oxygen — but the amount of dead bunker fish is a sign that the river is out of balance.
Pollution such as sewage can throw off oxygen levels dramatically.
