Sign the Petition, Save Ocean Life: Stop the Detonation of WWII-era Bombs at Molokini

2 Mins read

Environmentalists, marine conservation experts, and respected dive professionals are outraged by the U.S. Navy’s plans to detonate two WWII-era bombs around Maui’s Molokini Crater this month…

The explosion of these devices could cause irreversible damage to coral reefs, ocean life, and to the island itself — heavily disrupting the delicate ecosystems.

PLEASE SHARE THIS AND SIGN THE PETITION IN OUR HIGHLIGHT TO PROTECT MARINE WILDLIFE & PREVENT THE BOMBING OF MOLOKINI as we must work together and spread awareness to STOP this potential environmental disaster set to happen in July 2020! Environmentalists, marine conservation experts and respected dive professionals are all outraged that the Navy is scheduled to detonate a piece of buried ordnance inside Molokini in the coming weeks. It is unacceptable that this has progressed this far without proper consultations and public input. We beseech the Navy to use imagination, thought, care and consideration, and not take the easy way out and detonate this ordnance adjacent to some of the healthiest and most famed coral reef in the state, which has been growing for centuries, and in the vicinity of endangered species like Hawksbill Sea Turtles known to frequent the crater. Molokini is a unique marine resource that has been in conservation since 1977 when the crater and the surrounding 77 acres of underwater terrain were declared a Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD). The fact that the Navy wants to come up with no solution to safely lift the bomb and tow it into deep water is patently unacceptable. In fact, other solutions do exist which do not include intentional detonation and with all the technology available to the United State Navy, we submit that an alternative to bombing Molokini – which is exactly what detonating the ordnance is – needs to be found. The damage that would be done would be irreparable. WE MUST ALL PROTECT OUR WILDLIFE/ENVIRONMENT, PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION IN OUR HIGHLIGHT & SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FOLLOWERS & TAG PEOPLE/CELEBRITIES/INFLUENCERS/NEWS MEDIA WHO NEED TO SEE THIS BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE! #saveourocean #molokini #karmagawa #savethereef

Molokini and its surrounding areas were declared a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, and are full of birds and marine life — including reef sharks, ornate octopuses, manta rays, moray eels, and a colorful variety of fish.

The endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles are also known to frequent the crater.

Because of the beauty of the reef — which has been growing for centuries — it has become a favorite destination for snorkelers and divers.

The military explosives that didn’t detonate as intended must be removed because of threats to public safety, but we are asking the Navy to use more imagination, thought, care, and consideration to solve this problem.

The easy way out would be to simply detonate the ordnance, which is adjacent to some of the healthiest and most famed coral reefs in Hawaii — but we believe this option is unacceptable.

There are other options and with all the technology available to the U.S. Navy, we submit that an alternative needs to be found.

We must all do our part to protect wildlife and the environment, so please sign the petition to prevent the bombing before it’s too late. Share it with your family and loved ones so that they can sign it too.
