Kaavan, the ‘World’s Loneliest Elephant’ Is Lonely No More

2 Mins read

Kaavan, who has been called the “world’s loneliest elephant,” is now free and getting used to his new life at a sanctuary.

Four Paws released a video showing the happy elephant exploring his new spacious and outdoor home!

We’ve done a previous post about Kaavan, who has suffered a hard life. The Asian elephant has spent most of his life in captivity at a zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. He had a partner named Saheli that died in 2012 and Kaavan has been living trapped and alone since then.

At the zoo, he stayed in a small enclosure with a dirty pond and was often chained up. Because of the poor conditions, poor Kaavan suffered from mental issues.

Somehow, pop icon, Cher, who also co-founded a nonprofit called Free the Wild, heard about Kaavan’s story and decided to do something to help.

She led a social media campaign with the hashtag #freeKaavan and made as much noise as she could. Things worked really well and in May of 2020, a judge ruled that Kaavan should be moved to someplace that could take better care of him.

Now Kaavan isn’t lonely anymore. Take a look at this photo …

Kaavan is interacting with other elephants and even socializing with female elephants! Elephants weren’t meant to live in isolation and now Kaavan can be officially called the “no longer lonely elephant.”

At Karmagawa we’re so happy about this. All animals deserve to be free and because of caring people and the use of social media, Kaavan can have a happy ending to his story.
