Courageous Elephant Brought Back to Health After Being Shot by Poison Arrows

1 Mins read

A courageous elephant is being treated back to health by heroic vets after it was shot with poison arrows and left in terrible condition by poachers in Kenya.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, one of Africa’s oldest wildlife charities, got the report of the injured elephant on April 19 and sent their veterinary unit, which included Dr. Poghon, to treat the beautiful animal.

When Dr. Poghon got close enough to examine, he found the bull elephant severely wounded. There were a total of 5 arrow wounds on one side and a very swollen leg on the other.

To the veterinary team’s relief, the elephant responded well to the care. When he was able to stand up, he showed no aggression to the humans — seeming to understand he had been helped. Thankfully, the bull elephant has defied death and is showing improvement. He is being monitored and will likely need a second treatment.

It’s estimated that between 50 to 100 elephants are killed each day, mainly for their ivory tusks that are being used to make things such as billiard balls and piano keys.

Elephants are in danger because some humans value money more than the lives of these beautiful giants — and this needs to stop!

That’s why Karmagawa supports charities like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and we’ve donated money so that more elephants can be saved from death. Please think about doing the same.
